Why these fires are different — and why insurers fight them
Standard homeowner and renter insurance was not underwritten for lithium-ion thermal runaway. Many carriers now exclude or sub-limit damages from e-bike and e-scooter battery fires, especially where the pack was non-UL or aftermarket. The legal fight is almost always about whether the pack was the proximate cause, whether the charger was matched to the pack, and whether the rider had been warned in writing.
We have seen seven-figure recoveries where a single counterfeit pack burned down a three-unit building, and we have seen total denials where the homeowner could not produce the original packaging. Documentation is everything. Do not throw the burned bike, battery, charger, or packaging in the dumpster — they are physical evidence, and they belong to your case.
