Our verdict

By Sean Lupton · May 26, 2026 · Scored 8.5/10 against how we test

The Portola is the value folder to beat, for the buyer who wants big-battery range and real brakes in a package that packs down. A 720Wh pack and Class 3 speed on a sub-$1,300 folder is unusual, making it a strong pick for multimodal commuters and RV owners who won't mind the heft. Riders who need to carry the bike frequently or want a plush ride should note the honest limits below.

The 8.5 reflects standout value and brakes-and-safety: the Tektro hydraulic discs are the right call, and the battery is UL 2849 certified — which we consider essential and which cheaper folders routinely skip. Real-world range scores well too, thanks to that unusually large pack. Where it gives ground, per the listing, is ride quality: it's heavy to lift folded at 62 lbs, and there's no suspension riding on 20×3-inch tires.

The trade-off is portability and comfort for range and value. You accept a heavy fold and an unsprung ride to get a battery and brake package that embarrasses the category on price. For someone who folds occasionally and rides a lot, that's the right bargain. If you frequently haul the bike up stairs, Lectric's ~49-lb XP Lite is the lighter alternative — with a much smaller battery and less speed to show for the weight savings.
