On-bike multi-tool

Every loose bolt, dropped chain, or roadside saddle adjustment turns into a long walk home without one. Live on the bike.

On-bike multi-tool

A good multi-tool fits 95% of your bike's fasteners (M4/5/6 hex, T25 Torx, Phillips, flat) and includes a chain breaker and a couple of spoke wrench sizes. Look for hardened steel bits — soft bits round out hex heads, which is worse than no tool at all.

Carry it where you'll always have it: saddle bag, hip pack, or jersey pocket. Plus a tube, tire levers, and CO2 (or a mini pump). Without all three you're not actually self-rescuing.

Where to buy

Two paths — match your spend to the bike. Quality picks last longer and protect resale; affordable picks get you riding safely today.

Pro tips from our test team

  • Buy one with a 4mm hex bit. Half your bike's bolts are 4mm and most cheap tools skip it.
  • Carry it with your patch kit, tube, levers, and CO2 inflator. A tool alone doesn't fix a flat.
  • Check the bits annually. Heat, sweat, and road grit eat the cheaper coatings.
