A floor pump (or 'track pump') reaches your target pressure in 20 strokes; a mini pump takes 200. The gauge is the point — without it, you're guessing. Inflate within 5 PSI of the recommended pressure on the sidewall and your range, comfort, and flat resistance all improve.
Look for a pump that fits both Presta and Schrader valves (auto-detecting heads are best), has a steel barrel for longevity, and reaches at least 160 PSI even if you'll never need that much — those pumps are built better.

Pro tips from our test team
- Check pressure once a week. Tubes lose 5–10 PSI per week even when nothing is wrong.
- Lower the pressure 5–10 PSI from the sidewall recommendation. Modern wide tires almost always feel better below the printed max.
- If you have tubeless, get a pump with a charging chamber or a separate booster. Setting up tubeless without one is a study in frustration.
