Child seat or trailer

Two ways to ride with kids: a rear-mount seat (1 child, fast) or a trailer (1–2 kids, weather-proof). Both transform your e-bike into a minivan.

Child seat or trailer

Rear-mount seats (Thule Yepp Maxi, Hamax Caress) are quick on/off, work for kids ~9 months to ~6 years (22–48 lbs), and keep the child in line with the bike's center of gravity — important on an e-bike at speed. They mount to your rear rack via a MIK or RackTime adapter.

Trailers (Burley, Thule Chariot) carry 1–2 kids, double as joggers and strollers, and protect from weather and crashes. Slower and bulkier, but the safest option in mixed traffic. For commuting an active kid to daycare, the trailer wins; for a quick neighborhood loop, the seat wins.

Where to buy

Pro tips from our test team

  • Don't put a 60-lb seat + kid on a 55-lb-rated rack. Upgrade the rack first. (See accessory #10.)
  • Always practice riding loaded before your first 'real' trip. Balance, braking, and turning all change.
  • Get a helmet that fits your child today and one for next year. Outgrown helmets are a waste.
