Our verdict
By Sean Lupton · May 12, 2026 · Scored 8.2/10 against how we test
The Basalt is a long-range fat-tire bike with a genuinely useful twist: an optional inverter kit that turns its big battery into a portable power station. That makes it a natural fit for campers, tailgaters, and anyone who wants outage backup alongside their weekend miles. At $1,899 it's a value adventure bike; riders who want a light, sporty ride or don't care about the power-station angle can find simpler fat bikes for less.
The 8.2 is anchored by real-world range and safety: a 940Wh, UL 2849 certified pack backs the up-to-80-mile claim credibly, and hydraulic discs with a 400 lb payload cover brakes-and-safety and load. Build-and-serviceability rate well thanks to that certification and the modular power kit. The score is tempered by value once you add the paid inverter, and by weight — like all fat bikes it's a heavy 73 lb.
The compromise is that the headline feature costs extra, so the true price climbs if you want the power-station capability. If backup power genuinely appeals, that's money well spent on a certified battery. If you just want long fat-tire range without the inverter, the Segway Xafari offers a similar UL-certified big-battery package with a torque sensor and Find My tracking for around the same money.
