Most e-bikes ship with a token headlight. A real 800+ lumen light is the difference between seeing the pothole and hitting it.
Look for at least 800 lumens for unlit roads, 400+ for city riding, and a beam pattern shaped for cycling (cutoff at the top so you don't blind oncoming drivers). German StVZO-approved lights have this beam pattern by law; American lights vary wildly.
